New Year Eat-olutions

Don’t eat sugar, avoid low fat stuff, cut out carbs, eat more horse….what are they going to tell us next?

We know it’s January, the month for new starts and the opportunity to make life changes that you’ve been thinking about for ages, but really?….it is dominating the media so much at the moment that quite frankly, it’s getting boring.

In fact, it has sent us Glowies the other way! It lead to a conversation about guilty food pleasures and produced some very interesting results and debates.

Paul, at the weekend, finally succumbed to the amazing combination of waffles, bacon and maple syrup. Something for which we have the Americans to thank. Over the Christmas break, Abi made a family favourite that combines sherry and milk (yes, really) and the boss revealed that she eats anything that isn’t cooked – namely raw pastry and cake mix. This could explain a lot!

Our tastes are so different, that when you get disgusted looks from other people about something that seems yummy to you, you wonder if you’re normal.

Here are a couple of examples, not of bizarre combinations, but everyday products that show that we are all so individual when it comes to taste. What we consider to be right or wrong, a lot of the time comes down to what we prefer and what works for us.

Chocolate. Should it be room temperature or eaten straight from the fridge? A friend of mine won’t eat a certain Cream Egg if it hasn’t been in the freezer for a few hours. Some like it hot, some don’t like it at all, but they’re just weird.

Coffee. Some can’t stand it, some like the smell but not the taste, some have it milky and sugary, some just strong and black. Iced coffee has made a big statement in recent years, but the thought of this is hideous to some.

When everybody is so different to the person next to them surely this bombardment of what we should and should not eat by so called ‘experts’ is, in my opinion, more damaging. How can these general sweeping statements possibly apply to all of us?

So what has this got to do with Glow or what we do? Well, nothing really, but we do love our food and we would like to hear about any more weird and wonderful creations, combinations or preferences. Maybe find yourself inspired by the people telling you not to eat something and go ahead and do the exact opposite! Thankfully, we at Glow are relatively sensible (apart from eating raw pastry) and are finding all these fad diets quite amusing. That said, check back here in 6 months time and see the state of us then.
